TRX City Park and Gender Sensitive Urban Design celebrated at AILA National Awards
The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) announced the winners of their 2024 National Landscape Architecture Awards on Wurundjeri Country in Melbourne last month.
Our work was recognised with two AILA National Landscape Architecture Awards given to works “of excellence demonstrating consummate skill that contributes to the advancement of landscape architecture.”
In the International category, Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) City Park, a 4-hectare rooftop park in Kuala Lumpur delivered in collaboration with Pentago, was commended by the jury for responding to the need for transformation within the city’s busy urban areas. “The design team have taken a blank space and turned it into a diverse and popular public green space that employs advanced soil design techniques, and includes water play areas and an innovative drainage system. A diverse and vibrant plant palette alongside deep soil planting helps to mitigate urban heat issues, while seamless integration into Kuala Lumpur’s public space network enables the park to enhance the greater urban landscape. In this respect, the project sets a new benchmark for future green infrastructure developments.”
The ACT Government’s Gender Sensitive Urban Design Guidelines and Implementation Toolkit, developed by PLACE Laboratory, OCULUS, Communication Link, and Inhabit Place, was celebrated in the Research, Policy and Communications category, with the jury noting the project extends an underrepresented topic. “This project builds upon existing knowledge to develop a comprehensive set of guidelines for the public realm that focuses on the creation of spaces that are equitable, inclusive and safe. The jury commends the project team and client for recognising and championing the requirements of truly inclusive and safe urban landscapes.” Since working on the project, we’ve applied our gender sensitive urban design knowledge to projects across Australia.
Congratulations to our colleagues, clients, and collaborators for their work on these projects, and to everyone celebrated on the night.
