The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, The High-Country Rail Trail and the Great Victorian Rail Trail combine to create a network of over 250km of trails in country Victoria that are both extensive and extraordinary. The Game Changing Rail Trail Project (GCRTP) was developed as a scoping and concept design exercise to reimagine the priority sections of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trails. The project developed concepts for a range of artistic, interpretative and architectural installations that will heighten the experience of the rail trail and differentiate this Victorian regional offering from its national and international competitors, creating destinations accessed along the trails. The project focused on an investment in infrastructure to enhance visitor experience, drive repeat tourist visitation, leading to investment in the region to assist the development of regional communities. This project aims to enable new connections for a diverse range of visitors from varying demographics (cyclists, food and art lovers) by enhancing the natural and cultural values offered by this unique region. OCULUS was engaged to drive the conceptual design of this project in close collaboration with the client and key stakeholders to test scope and feasibility in support of successful state government regional funding applications. The trail enhancements incorporated: • retrofitting of existing structures, trail markers and wayfinding elements • design of new structures • amenity - seating/shade/rest areas • artworks/installations • landscape enhancements • temporary installations • enhancements with indescribable qualities, that provide a unique, memorable, visitor experience.
